One of my favorite parts about living in the central valley is the sheer multitude of styles of taco trucks that exist. Nena’s is a great example of some tacos you might not expect to get from a truck, but that will become a place you come back to time and time again. While many taco trucks in the central valley have a specific style that you have probably noticed by now from my posts, the best way I can describe Nena’s food is “abuela food” in ALL the best ways.
Nena’s is not just focused on tacos, and their menu is actually very large for a food truck, ranging from menudo and birria plates to mole, tostadas, pambazos and plenty more. Of course I will be talking about the tacos, and in particular the birria tacos.
When you think of birria tacos, you may be thinking of the quesabirria style tacos that have taken off in popularity in the past few years. These are a pretty different style. Instead of very fatty birria that is fried off and melted in with cheese, this birria is stripped back, topped with nothing but onions and cilantro, and a little bit of salsa verde. The pillowy home made tortillas soak up all of the juice from the birria making so many perfect bites, especially after you dip it into the consomme. And boy do I have to talk about that consomme. Not too fatty or greasy, intensely flavorful, after you finish your tacos, you’ll probably finish drinking the cup of consomme as well. Finally, the cherry on top? This place doesn’t just have birria de res, it also has birria de chivo, a much more uncommon option in the valley.
Anytime you’re having a craving for very well crafted, homestyle Mexican food, pay Nena’s a visit, you won’t regret it.
