First off, to acknowledge the elephant in the room, yes, those are tomatoes and shredded lettuce on the tacos. Anyone who knows Cen-Cal taco truck style tacos knows that the formula is very simple: tortilla, meat, onions and cilantro, and salsa. 9 times out of ten, you can expect that on your plate. But a break from tradition is not in and of itself a bad thing, and El Super Antojito is a perfect example of this. The tomatoes were closer to a pounded molcajete salsa as opposed to just diced taco bell tomatoes. They had serious flavor, and complemented the meat very well.
The asada was well cooked and very tender. It did not have much char at all, and was well seasoned to contrast with the vibrant green salsa. This salsa was punchy and fruity, very bright and acidic, with strong ripe green tomatillo notes. The entire taco worked very well together. I can honestly say I’ve never had another taco that felt so incredibly fresh with each bite.
It may not be what you expect from a taco truck, but if you are in the area it is definitely worth a try for something so uncommonly seen in this area.
